Elroy Wutzke
Artist’s Statement:
“My interests are in many forms and styles of art, however my driving force has been painting the Still Life. Inspired by the Dutch Masters, with their use of a bright single light source and dark shadows, I try to capture objects such as pottery, glass, furniture and musical instruments along with all of the beautiful and strange shapes that nature has to offer found in fruits, vegetables and flowers. Placed in a composition, these objects attain a character all their own and become the peaceful, timeless setting in the stillness of the Still Life.”
Elroy Wutzke
Biography
Born in Medicine Hat Alberta in 1952, Elroy Wutzke was raised and worked in the surrounding area until into his thirties. In 1985 a move to the Okanagan Valley of British Columbia rekindled a long time interest and desire to paint. Some introductory instruction from well known artists in the valley and enrollment in the Fine Arts program at Okanagan University College gave Elroy the skills to become a well recognized and sought after artist.
Elroy’s main focus and inspiration came from the Dutch Masters of the 16 and 1700’s. By using a strong single light source and dark shadow Elroy is able to recreate the style of the old masters called Chiaroscuro (Italian for light-dark) the term usually applies to Rembrandt and Caravaggio whose works embody the style more common in the past.
Elroy does a wonderful modern rendition of this style by carefully managing the light and shadows, which predominate the pieces. Elroy uses common fruits, vegetables and flowers, abundant in the Okanagan Valley, combined with pottery, glass and antiques to recreate a timeless realistic setting much in the same manner that the Dutch Masters of old had done. His ability to work with shiny metal objects such as brass and copper complete the look.
Elroy still lives in the Okanagn Valley and although he will remain painting the Still Life, he is also making a move to capture the diverse and sometimes disappearing life styles of the orchardist and the ever-expanding growth of the wine industry in the area through his art with Landscape paintings. This new desire will also see Elroy record through his art the beauty and diverse landscape and disappearing lifestyle of the Prairies where he was born and raised.
